As we will show in our Belfast gay guide and live showcase of the local Belfast gay scene to any gay boy or girl is the capital of and largest city in Northern Ireland. Populationwise, it is the 14th biggest city in the United Kingdom and 2nd largest on the island of Ireland itself after Dublin. The city itself has a population of 277,500 and is in the heart of the Belfast urban area, which has a total population of 600,000.
Although not big on gay tourism, it is currently experiencing a successful tourist boom, being one of the most visited cities in the UK, and the second most visited in Ireland after Dublin. In 2008, 7.1 million tourists visited Belfast. There are loads of tour bus companies and lovely boat tours running every month.
If you're visiting, you'll be reassured to know that Frommer's, (an American travel book) named Belfast as the only United Kingdom destination in its Top 12 Destinations to Visit in 2009.
To further aid tourism the Belfast City Council is currently investing into the complete redevelopment of the Titanic Quarter, which is planned to consist of apartments, hotels and a riverside entertainment district, which will no doubt be popular with the gays and lesbians- in fact it's opening soon as we write! To further underline a city on the up there's loads of investment in transport so getting out and about including to the Belfast gay scene will get better.
Well, Belfast now has it's own live Gay Events calendar courtesy of Enqueer, and an events calandar for every Belfast gay business and business type, so join in and have fun!
