The Gay bar and pub Scene in Belfast is small and situated just north of the City Centre in the Cathedral Quarter. It's all within walking walking distance of each other. As we said it's small by some standards but the second largest in Ireland after Dublin. In the past 10 years or so the population has become more liberal and accepting , so Belfast has a trendy and lively gay scene and we'll make sure Enqueer features every gay business in Belfast.
In fact back in 2005 the UK's first gay and lesbian civil partnerships (not quite marriage) took place with alot of coverage in the local media in Belfast. The gay scene in Belfast is not as politically powerful, but there are signs that times they are a changing. OK so it will be a while until you get a massive gay village pulsating with loud gay bars and Brazilian muscle, but there are decent and varied gay bars and lesbian hangouts to ensure everyone is happy. And let's face it, who doesn't love a gay Northern Irish accent?
There's the scene mainstays like Kremlin and Mynt, which attract the twinkier Irish boys while gay bars like Union Street and Dubarrys serve the older mature guys and bears and their admiring younger guys. The gay pub scene in Belfast goes back to the early 1960s. There were always gay bars in Belfast where people knew they could meet other people and there were various other places. The Belfast gay scene now is the best there's ever been, and Enqueer will try to include new venues as they arise. Belfast has never had it so good we think, but things could be better. What is reassuring is that gay people mix on the Belfast gay scene irrespective of sectarian divisions that sometimes plague the place elsewhere, and the gay scene is friendly to tourists and locals.
